A wholesale samurai sword can perhaps serve well enough as a display piece. These cheap imitations of the real Japanese swords can of course never match up to the quality and craftsmanship of the originals. But they do represent a product with relatively good value for the low cost. Many of these replicas look close enough to the real thing, especially for most people who are not experts at evaluating Japanese swords.

These replica swords and other replicas like them represent a growing industry catering to the demand for the appearance and appeal of these items. They do indeed make rather interesting decoration and conversation pieces, while some people might want to use them as props in productions and the like. Still others might like to start a collection, but not have the money required for the real things.

There are many replicas available for the different types of swords through history and in different parts of the world. What is commonly known as a “samurai sword” is more precisely referred to as a katana; this is just one of the many different kinds of Japanese swords. Just to name a few, the wakizashi, the tachi, and the han-dachi are other types of Japanese swords which differ not only in size but also in the type of mount, among other things.

Another common misconception is that of a “ninja sword”. These swords are purely fiction, as there has been no historical evidence at all that has proven that ninjas used any special type of sword. Typically, ninja and samurai used the same kinds of swords.

There are also what are known as fantasy swords. As the term would imply, these swords are those that are not historical replicas, but merely creative fakes. Now, this does not mean that these swords do not have their own appeal. Many fantasy swords and weapons are actually collector’s pieces in themselves, as well. This is especially true for those pieces that are inspired by popular works of fantasy.

These “fake” swords would of course be useless in their original supposed purpose: as deadly weapons. The blades of these sword replicas and fantasy swords are nowhere near as thick or as strong as those of the originals, which were real swords. Most fake blades are made of aluminum, which is much less strong than steel. A wholesale samurai sword would hardly be able to cut a tomato, although it might look quite intimidating in its display position.
